GARDEN (No.5): Covered area and brick patio. Lawned garden with flower and shrub borders. Attractive cast iron fence.

The garden at 5/6 Grange Road is one of the most noted private gardens in Lewes, and what you see today was laid out in the 1930s by the Martin sisters. Winifred and Olive purchased two parts in 1925, and in 1937 the eastern part was purchased for two hundred pounds, and the western section behind no.10 and no.14 for fifty pounds. This area was originally part of the orchard of Southover Grange, and was sold by Charles Wyndham of Southover Grange. The garden has been part of the National Garden Scheme, raising money for charity. The garden can be appreciated from nos.5 & 6, but principally from no.6, which itself has a covered rear porch area and is laid in brick and stone paving gradually walking to the entrance of the main garden with iron fencing and shrubs, and with no.5 also laid to lawn with a terrace and borders. Both have rear lead and aluminium clad areas and outside water. The main garden is half an acre, an extraordinary size for central Lewes, and is a secret with its own separate entrance between nos. 2 and 3 Grange Road, and sits behind 2 Lewes primary schools. Walking through the cobbled and brick twitten and oak door, what is revealed cannot avoid a gasp of excitement and admiration. There is a long south facing stone terrace with brick trim, the garden is fully walled with a mix of brick stone and flint. 3 Apple trees remain from the orchard but a main feature is the extraordinary Yew tree and hedge as seen in our pictures, with brick rustic paths or stone walk across the beautifully shaded rear section with bamboo southern screen, and with a variety of pines and assorted trees. There is a most attractive central stone seating terrace with fine vista over shaped lawns, and a circular pond with circular millstones and shaped border, including a lavender hedge. Peonies are a strong feature from the 1930s with evergreen, ornamental cherries, cracked Willow and a fabulous Cornelian cherry. Stone benches are placed strategically looking from south-west and over the pond, and the brick pavier pathways snake through the intricacies including plinths for display. There is a giant Redwood, a Dawn Redwood and a Foxglove tree. There is a garden working area in the south-west corner.
